The Simboryo of Quingua

Despite the neglect it has suffered, the so-called Simboryo or mortuary chapel of Plaridel, Bulacan is often mentioned in listings of the province's historical sites. Although there is no hard information on its establishment, the structure was evidently built sometime in the 19th century back when the town was still known as Quingua.

The octagonal chapel hews to a more classical blueprint. False columns rise to a cornice-topped frieze crowned by a circular dome. Gothic-style lancet windows pierce each wall. Could these details indicate a mid to late 1800s time frame?

The grounds are believed to be a former cemetery; research conducted in the area yielded bones and other remains. The structure is now in the middle of a cramped neighborhood and, unfortunately, has not escaped the consequences of daily human activity.
